Your mind tend to wander because there are just to many shiny objects and lots and lots of other interesting things you can be doing. Being able to focus means you have to make a decision. I have always been interested in how people make decisions, and when I ask them I get the reply, “I don’t know, I just do”, I know there is more to this than that and I must leave that study for another time, for now I need to focus on maintaining focus. do you see how easy it is to get distracted? So how do you stay focused?
Make a decision
As I mentioned, one of the tricks to staying focused is quite simple, you make the decision to stay on task. Now this may take determination, so keep the thought of ‘this is my decision’ and stick to it. And, before you know it the task or project will be done. The decision can sound something like this, ‘I have made my decision to finish this project and set other interruptions aside until I am done. This is my final decision’.
Boundaries
To manage interruptions it is important to keep boundaries. You have made the decision to maintain focus and must let others know they need to respect your time and place.
Baby Steps
If it is a complicated task then you can take baby steps, meaning break the project into smaller accomplishments or tasks. In this way you only need to maintain focus on the smaller task or step at hand. Once you have completed that one smaller task, take a break, reward yourself and once again make the decision to focus on the next step.
It is up to you to pick and choose which of the 10 reason resonate with you and why you are procrastinating. So now you can begin implementing the tips to help you overcome your procrastination. This is not always an easy thing to do, because developing new habits take time, also another discussion for another time, until then, work it, rock it and get a handle on your procrastination
